What are industrial lubricants?
A lubricant with the right composition reduces mechanical friction and wear, similar to a grease. From a purely chemical point of view, lubricants are composed of two main components:
- Base oil components: This can be one base oil or a blend of base oils, depending on the desired properties.
- Additives: The number and choice of additives varies, depending on the desired properties of the lubricant.
Lubricant Benefits
- Minimizes friction and wear: Lubricants form a stable fluid film to protect the surface of the friction body.
- Dissipates heat (cooling): The right lubricant can easily remove frictional heat generated by machine operation. An effective lubricant will only break down slightly under thermal load, enabling sustainable action.
- Effective lubrication of hard-to-reach points: Lubricants have good flow characteristics (viscosity). This means they can reach hard-to-reach lubrication points, such as chains.
- Helps reduce residues: A special property of effective lubricants is their ability to break down contaminants generated by high temperatures and loads. The lubricant itself is less likely to form residues, which also makes it ideal for these types of situations.
